# Static websites

**On this page:** With the connector, Over HTTP, Examples, Limits

> Plain words unless the person is a developer. Never invent a link, name or code. [Rules](https://embarko.ai/docs/prerequisites)

An upload that is only files (index.html and assets) is published directly, with no build. It is usually live within 2 seconds.

**Connector:** deploy_app

**Done when:** The page opens at its link and looks right.

**With the connector**

1. Deploy it like any app. The reply is normally already "live".

**Over HTTP**

1. POST https://ship.embarko.ai/apps like any app. The reply is normally 200 with status "live". A very large site replies 202 "publishing": GET https://ship.embarko.ai/apps/{app-name}/status every 2 seconds.

**Example: Static site reply → 200 live**

Reply 200:

```json
{"success":true,"status":"live","app":{"name":"my-site","kind":"static","claimed":false,"expiresAt":"2026-10-10T06:50:46.326Z"},"next":"Live: give the user links.app and tell them it will be deleted at 2026-10-10T06:50:46.326Z unless claimed. To claim it, follow links.help.","links":{"app":"https://my-site.embarko.app","feedback":"https://ship.embarko.ai/apps/my-site/customer-query","help":"https://embarko.ai/docs/claim"}}
```

**Limits**

- No logs, env vars or DATA_DIR: nothing runs on a server.
- A static site cannot later become a server app (422 app_kind_changed). Use a new name.
- A single-page app with a build step (Vite, Create React App, Lovable) is built on Embarko and then served the same way; its build takes longer than a plain upload. Build-time values go in a committed config file (see deploy, How it starts).
- Data the page keeps in localStorage stays in each visitor's own browser: it is not shared and does not follow them to another device. Tell the person, or use a server app with SQLite if it must be shared.

**Next:** Deploy it. If it needs server code or secrets, deploy it as a server app.
